When passing a bicycle rider, the required gap you must leave depends on the speed limit:
- If the speed limit is 60 km/h or less, you must leave at least 1 metre of space between your vehicle and the bicycle rider.
- If the speed limit is over 60 km/h, the gap must be at least 1.5 metres.
This minimum passing distance is measured from the widest part of the bicycle or rider to the widest part of the motor vehicle. It applies to all types of vehicles and is a legal requirement to help protect vulnerable road users such as cyclists.
