Cats can burp, but it is quite rare and usually subtle compared to humans or dogs. Cats primarily breathe through their noses, which means they generally do not swallow much air that would cause burping. When cats do burp, it is typically because they have swallowed excess air while eating or drinking quickly, or due to some gastrointestinal issues like acid reflux, esophagitis, or indigestion. Occasional burping is not usually a concern, but frequent or excessive burping might indicate an underlying health problem and should be checked by a veterinarian. Cats that burp often may have conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, hairballs, or other digestive system issues. Open- mouth breathing and burping together can also be a sign of respiratory distress or other serious problems, especially in brachycephalic (flat-faced) cat breeds.
