false positive pregnancy test

A false positive pregnancy test means the test indicates pregnancy when the person is not actually pregnant. This can happen for several reasons including recent miscarriage or abortion because the pregnancy hormone hCG can stay in the body for weeks, use of certain medications especially fertility treatments containing hCG, medical conditions like ovarian cysts or cancers, or user errors such as reading the test after the recommended time or using an expired or defective test. Chemical pregnancies (very early pregnancy loss) and some rare medical conditions that produce hCG can also cause false positives. Evaporation lines appearing after the test window may be mistaken for a positive result. Although false positives are rare, they can occur especially if the test is not used correctly or under certain medical circumstances. To confirm pregnancy, it is advised to follow up with a blood test by a healthcare provider.
