George Washington was a Founding Father and the first president of the United States, serving from 1789 to 1797. He was commander of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, leading the Patriots to victory against British forces. Washington is often called the "Father of the Nation" for his pivotal role in American independence. He was unanimously elected as the first U.S. president and set important precedents for the office including the two- term tradition and the use of the title "Mr. President." Washington was also chairman of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, which drafted the U.S. Constitution. He was a Virginia planter who owned slaves, but later in life opposed slavery and arranged for the manumission of his slaves in his will. His legacy includes the U.S. capital city and the state of Washington being named after him, and he remains regarded as one of the greatest U.S. presidents in history.
