The Kola Superdeep Borehole is approximately 12,262 meters (40,230 feet or 7.6 miles) deep. It is the deepest man-made hole on Earth, drilled by the Soviet Union from 1970 until it reached this maximum depth in 1989. The project was stopped due to extreme temperatures and technical challenges encountered at that depth, with the borehole being officially closed in 2005.
