John Bonham, the drummer of Led Zeppelin, died on September 25, 1980, at the age of 32. The cause of his death was choking on his own vomit after a day of heavy binge drinking. He consumed roughly 40 shots of vodka over about 12 hours, which led to him vomiting while unconscious and subsequently suffocating. His death was ruled accidental, with pulmonary aspiration (inhalation of vomit) being the immediate cause. There were no other drugs found in his system at the time, although he had recently been taking medication for anxiety and depression. Bonham's death led to Led Zeppelin deciding to disband rather than replace him.
