To assess the brachial pulse of an infant, lay the infant flat on their back in a safe position. Gently extend one arm with the palm facing up. Use your index and middle fingers (not the thumb) to feel along the inner upper arm, midway between the shoulder and elbow, where the brachial artery runs between the biceps and triceps muscles. Apply gentle pressure until you feel the pulse, which may be subtle. Count the beats for 15 seconds and multiply by 4 to estimate the heart rate, which typically ranges between 120 and 160 beats per minute in infants. This method is preferred during CPR and circulatory evaluation in infants under one year old.
