An ostrich can run at speeds of up to about 60 miles per hour (97 km/h) in short bursts. They can sustain a speed of around 37 to 43 miles per hour (60 to 70 km/h) for longer periods, even up to 30 to 40 minutes. Ostriches are the fastest running birds on land and are adapted for incredible speed with long strides of about 16 feet (5 meters) and powerful legs.
