Black cats usually live about as long as other domestic cats. Their coat color does not shorten or lengthen their life by itself.
Typical lifespan
Most pet cats live on average around 13–17 years, and reaching the late teens is common with good care. Some individual cats can reach 20 years or more, though that is less common.
Does black color matter?
There is no evidence that black fur color changes a cat’s lifespan; black cats are generally expected to live about the same length of time as other domestic cats. Lifespan is driven much more by genetics, diet, environment, and medical care than by coat color.
Factors that affect lifespan
- Indoor cats typically live longer than outdoor cats because they face fewer risks such as accidents, fights, and infections.
- Neutered or spayed cats generally live longer than intact cats, partly due to lower risks of certain diseases and behaviors that lead to injury.
- Good nutrition, regular vet checkups, vaccinations, and dental care all help a black cat reach the upper end of the normal feline lifespan.
