The total number of people who died in the 9/11 attacks was 2,996, including the 19 hijackers. Excluding the hijackers, 2,977 victims lost their lives. The deaths were distributed as follows: 2,606 people died in and around the World Trade Center, 125 at the Pentagon, and 265 on the four hijacked planes (with no survivors). Among the victims were 343 firefighters, 72 law enforcement officers, and 55 military personnel. The attacks affected people from over 90 countries, making it the deadliest act of terrorism in history.

More specifically, 2,753 people died in the World Trade Center in New York City, including 343 firefighters; 184 died at the Pentagon near Washington, D.C.; and 40 individuals died near Shanksville, Pennsylvania where one of the planes crashed.
