This event happens when a blue moon coincides with a supermoon. A blue moon is usually defined as a second full moon in a single calendar month or the third full moon in a season of four full moons, occurring every two to three years. A supermoon occurs when the full moon is at or near its closest point to Earth, which happens three to four times a year. The rarity of both events aligning makes the super blue moon uncommon.
