To check the oil in a car, follow these steps:
- Park the car on a flat surface and turn off the engine. Let the engine cool down for several minutes so the oil can settle.
- Open the car's bonnet (hood) and locate the dipstick. It usually has a brightly colored handle (often yellow) and may have an oil can symbol.
- Pull the dipstick out completely and wipe it clean with a rag or paper towel.
- Insert the dipstick fully back into its tube and then pull it out again to check the oil level.
- Examine the oil level on the dipstick. It should be between the two marks indicating the minimum and maximum level (sometimes shown as "add" and "full" or cross-hatched areas).
- If the oil level is low or below the minimum mark, add the recommended oil gradually, checking the level each time to avoid overfilling.
- After checking or adding oil, securely replace the dipstick and close the bonnet.
Check the oil regularly (about once a month) to keep the engine in good condition and prevent damage from low oil levels.
