Under RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations), the following actions must be carried out:
- Reportable incidents must be reported to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). This includes:
- Work-related deaths (excluding suicides).
- Specified injuries to workers such as fractures (excluding fingers, thumbs, and toes), amputations, serious burns, loss of sight, crush injuries, scalping needing hospital treatment, unconsciousness from head injury or asphyxia, and injuries from enclosed spaces causing hypothermia or requiring hospital admission.
- Injuries causing an employee to be unable to perform normal work duties for more than seven consecutive days.
- Occupational diseases diagnosed as work-related.
- Dangerous occurrences or near-miss events that could have caused serious harm.
- Reporting timelines:
- Fatalities and major injuries must be reported immediately.
- Other reportable incidents within 10 days.
- Injuries leading to over-seven-day work absence must be reported no later than 15 days after the incident.
- Responsible persons such as employers, managers, site controllers, or principal contractors must complete the reporting process, using online reporting forms or telephone in urgent cases.
- Following a RIDDOR report, a thorough investigation should be conducted to analyze causes, update risk assessments, review staff training, assess safety procedures, and improve workplace safety.
Failure to report or comply with RIDDOR can lead to severe legal consequences including fines, prosecution, and imprisonment.
