To be a narcissist means to have a personality style characterized by excessive self-centeredness, an inflated sense of self-importance, and a lack of genuine concern for others' feelings and needs. Narcissists often see themselves as unique, special, and superior to others, expecting admiration and recognition even when undeserved. They tend to have shallow relationships, show low empathy, and use others to boost their own self-esteem. When their inflated self-view is challenged, they may react with aggression or emotional distress. Narcissism exists on a spectrum ranging from traits that many people might have to a severe mental health condition called narcissistic personality disorder (NPD), which significantly impairs relationships and functioning. NPD includes symptoms such as grandiosity, an obsession with power and success, entitlement, envy, arrogance, and a strong need for admiration, along with difficulty in maintaining empathy and dealing with criticism.
