The Sun is a G-type main-sequence star, also known as a yellow dwarf star. It has a surface temperature between about 5,300 and 6,000 Kelvin and fuses hydrogen into helium in its core to generate light. The Sun is considered a middle-aged star in the main sequence phase of its life, having existed for about 4.6 billion years and expected to continue for another approximately 7 billion years before evolving into a red giant and later a white dwarf. Although called a yellow dwarf, its light is essentially white and appears yellow due to Earth's atmosphere. It belongs to the Population I group of stars, meaning it contains relatively large amounts of heavier elements (metals) from previous generations of stars.
