If you sense your student is experiencing mild hypoglycemia, you should:
- Provide a quick source of sugar such as 3-4 glucose tablets, 4 ounces of juice, 6 ounces of regular soda, or 3 teaspoons of glucose gel.
- Wait 10 to 15 minutes.
- Recheck the student's blood glucose if possible.
- If symptoms persist or blood glucose remains low, repeat the quick-sugar treatment.
- Follow up with a snack containing carbohydrates and protein, like cheese and crackers.
- Notify the school nurse or trained diabetes personnel and monitor the student closely.
Never send the student away alone and always treat suspected hypoglycemia promptly to prevent worsening.
