Aditya L1 is not intended to reach the Sun itself but to reach the Sun-Earth Lagrange Point 1 (L1), which is about 1.5 million kilometers from Earth, towards the Sun. The spacecraft was launched on September 2, 2023, and reached its destination orbit around L1 on January 6, 2024, after about four months of journey. L1 is about one percent of the distance between the Earth and the Sun, allowing the observatory to study the Sun's outer atmosphere continuously without interruption from the Earth or Moon. Thus, Aditya L1 "reached" its target point near the Sun on January 6, 2024.
