The Black Death arrived in England in June 1348. The first known case was a seaman who arrived at Weymouth (Melcombe), Dorset, from Gascony, France. From there, the plague quickly spread across southern England, reaching Bristol and London by autumn 1348, and then throughout the country by summer 1349. The arrival is often recorded shortly before the Feast of St. John the Baptist on June 24, 1348, with some indication it may have actually arrived around early May 1348. The disease caused massive mortality, killing an estimated 40-60% of the English population during its first wave.
