The first residential school in Canada opened in 1831. It was the Mohawk Indian Residential School in Brantford, Ontario. This school began as a residential school for boys and started taking in girls in 1834, becoming the longest operated residential school until it closed in 1970.

In the United States, the first off-reservation boarding school, the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania, opened later in 1879.
