Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated annually from September 15 to October 15 in the United States. This month-long observance recognizes the contributions and influence of Hispanic culture on the nation's history, achievements, and culture. The starting date, September 15, marks the anniversary of independence for several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. During this period, the independence days of Mexico (September 16) and Chile (September 18) are also commemorated, along with Columbus Day or Día de la Raza in October. Hispanic Heritage Month began as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 and was expanded to a month-long celebration in 1988 by legislation signed by President Ronald Reagan.
