The Data Protection Act was made in different versions over time:
- The original Data Protection Act in the UK was passed in 1984.
- The more well-known Data Protection Act 1998, which protected personal data stored on computers and in filing systems, was enacted in 1998 and was enforceable until it was replaced in 2018.
- The current Data Protection Act 2018 received Royal Assent on May 23, 2018, and came into effect on May 25, 2018, coinciding with the enforcement of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
So, the major Data Protection Acts were made in 1984, 1998, and the latest in 2018.
