The toothbrush in a form recognizable today was invented in 1498 in China, where bristles made from hog hair were attached to handles of bone or bamboo. The first mass-produced toothbrush was created by William Addis in England around 1780, using swine bristles and a bone handle. The modern nylon-bristled toothbrush was invented in 1938, replacing animal hair bristles. The first electric toothbrush was invented in 1939 but became popular in the 1960s.
