where are my kidneys

Nature

Your kidneys are in your upper low back area, not down in your belly. They sit on each side of your spine, just below your rib cage, roughly behind your lowest ribs.

Basic location

Each person usually has two kidneys, one on the left and one on the right of the spine. They lie toward the back of your abdomen (behind your other organs), which is why kidney issues often feel like deep back pain rather than front belly pain.

How to picture the spot

To roughly find the area, put your hands on your sides with your thumbs around the back, at the level of your lowest ribs; the kidneys are deep inside under your thumbs on each side of the spine. They are about the size of a fist and are partly protected by those lower ribs.

If you are feeling pain

Kidney pain is usually felt higher than typical low back pain, just under the ribs on one or both sides of the spine, and can sometimes spread toward the belly or groin. If you have strong pain there, fever, blood in your urine, or trouble peeing, contact a doctor or emergency care promptly.
