The Everglades is a natural region of flooded grasslands located in the southern part of the U.S. state of Florida. It covers a large area starting near Orlando with the Kissimmee River flowing into Lake Okeechobee and continues as a slow-moving river and wetland system flowing southward across a limestone shelf to Florida Bay at the southern end of Florida. The Everglades National Park protects the southern portion of this region, covering about 1.5 million acres near Miami and is the largest tropical wilderness in the United States. The Everglades spread across several counties in southern Florida including Dade, Monroe, and Collier counties.
