Ed Gein lived most of his life on a rural farm near the small town of Plainfield, Wisconsin. His family had moved to a 155 to 195-acre farm there in 1914, which became their permanent residence. Gein rarely left the farm except to attend school and do odd jobs nearby. After his father died in 1940 and his brother in 1944, he remained living on the isolated farm with his mother until her death in 1945, after which he continued to live alone on the property. The farmhouse was in a rural area about 87 miles north of Madison, Wisconsin.
