Leif Erikson is believed to have landed in what is now Newfoundland, Canada. He called this new land "Vinland" due to its abundance of wild grapes and fertile land. Archaeological evidence of a Norse settlement has been found at L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, supporting the historical accounts of Erikson's landing and settlement there around the year 1000 CE. Before reaching Vinland, Erikson and his crew also encountered other lands they named Helluland (likely Baffin Island) and Markland (likely Labrador) as they traveled along the coast of North America. His voyage made him one of the first Europeans to set foot on continental America, well before Christopher Columbus.
