Fruit flies come into the house mainly from the outside through open doors, windows, or cracks. They are attracted by the smell of ripening or rotting fruits, vegetables, and other fermenting organic matter like food spills, garbage, drains, mops, or trash bins. Fruit flies may also be brought in on fruits or vegetables purchased from stores, where eggs or larvae are already present. Once inside, they lay eggs on these food sources, leading to rapid breeding and infestation. They can also breed in moist areas such as kitchen drains or bathroom mops where organic material accumulates. Their quick reproductive cycle allows populations to grow fast as long as favorable conditions like fermenting matter are available in the house.
