The United Nations (UN) meets primarily at its headquarters located in the Turtle Bay neighborhood of Midtown Manhattan in New York City. This complex includes the General Assembly Building, where the UN General Assembly convenes for its annual sessions and other meetings. The headquarters is situated on grounds bordered by First Avenue, 42nd Street, 48th Street, and the East River. Although physically in the United States, the land is under the sole administration of the United Nations and is treated as extraterritorial through a treaty with the U.S. government. Aside from the New York headquarters, the UN has three additional major regional headquarters or offices in Geneva (Switzerland), Vienna (Austria), and Nairobi (Kenya), which handle various specialized UN activities. The most prominent meetings, including the annual session of the General Assembly, take place at the UN headquarters in New York, typically starting every September.
