The UK gets its gas mainly from a combination of domestic production and imports. About 40-50% of the gas supply comes from the UK's own offshore production in the North Sea and the UK Continental Shelf. The remaining majority, roughly 50-60%, is imported. The largest single import source is Norway, which supplies about 50% of the UK's gas, primarily via pipelines. The UK also imports liquefied natural gas (LNG) from countries including the United States, Qatar, and sometimes from the Netherlands, Belgium, and other countries. The UK is actively diversifying its gas supply sources and simultaneously reducing gas consumption as it moves toward net-zero emissions by 2050, with gas demand declining steadily over the past decade and future production in the North Sea expected to decline.
