Macau is a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the People's Republic of China, located on the southern coast of China. It lies on the western bank of the Pearl River Delta in southern Guangdong Province, about 60 kilometers (37 miles) southwest of Hong Kong and about 145 kilometers (90 miles) from Guangzhou. Macau consists of the Macau Peninsula and the islands of Taipa and Coloane, which are connected by bridges and reclaimed land forming the Cotai area. It borders the Zhuhai Special Economic Zone of mainland China and has a small land border with Guangdong province. Macau is situated on the southwestern corner of the Pearl River estuary and faces the South China Sea to the south and east.
