where is pompeii

Pompeii is an ancient Roman city located in the Campania region of Italy, about 14 miles (23 km) southeast of Naples. It sits at the southeastern base of Mount Vesuvius. The city was famously destroyed and buried under volcanic ash and pumice during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Today, the site of Pompeii is near the modern town of Pompei and is a significant archaeological site.
