The Shawshank Redemption was primarily filmed at the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio. This Romanesque and Gothic-style prison served as the fictional Shawshank State Penitentiary. Additional filming locations include Mansfield city and surrounding areas in Ohio such as Malabar Farm State Park (for Andy’s wife and lover's house and the oak tree scene), Upper Sandusky for the courtroom scene, and Butler, Ohio, serving as the rural town of Buxton. The iconic beach reunion scene was filmed at Sandy Point Beach in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. The filming took place mainly between June and September 1993.
