The Sound of Music was primarily filmed on location in and around Salzburg, Austria. Key filming locations include the Salzburg area such as Mirabell Palace and Gardens (famous for the "Do-Re-Mi" scene), Nonnberg Abbey (exterior shots of the abbey where Maria was a novice), Schloss Leopoldskron and Schloss Frohnburg (used as the front of the von Trapp villa), and Mondsee Cathedral (the wedding scene location). Some scenes were also filmed in the Austrian Lake District, including the Mehlweg mountain near the Bavarian village of Markt Schellenberg, and in Berchtesgadener Land. Additional filming took place at the 20th Century Fox studios in California for interior scenes. Hence, the movie captures both real Austrian landscapes and studio sets.
