The Chargers were originally from Los Angeles. They were founded in 1959 and began play in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). Their original owner was Barron Hilton, the son of Hilton Hotels founder Conrad Hilton. The team played their first season in Los Angeles before relocating to San Diego in 1961 due to low attendance. The Chargers initially planned to play at the Rose Bowl but instead played at the Los Angeles Coliseum during their first season. The team name "Chargers" was chosen by a contest winner and was liked by Hilton because of the crowd cheering "charge" at Los Angeles Dodgers and USC games, and possibly to promote Hilton's new credit card business called "Carte Blanche".
