The Iroquois, also known as the Haudenosaunee or the Six Nations Confederacy, were located in a continuous territory around the Great Lakes region, specifically around Lakes Ontario, Huron, and Erie. Their homeland encompassed present-day New York State, Pennsylvania in the United States, and parts of southern Ontario and Quebec in Canada. Historically, the Iroquois territory extended from northwestern Pennsylvania and New York State north to the St. Lawrence River, east to Montreal and the Hudson River, and south into regions of present-day Virginia, Kentucky, and the Ohio Valley. The core nations of the Iroquois Confederacy inhabited central and western New York State, including the Finger Lakes region.
