Mormonism was created by Joseph Smith Jr., who founded the religion in the early 19th century. Joseph Smith claimed to have received visions and divine instructions, including discovering and translating the Book of Mormon from ancient gold plates shown to him by an angel named Moroni. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly known as the Mormon Church, was officially established by Smith on April 6, 1830, in Fayette, New York, with a small group of followers.
