The 9/11 attacks were orchestrated by the Islamist extremist group al-Qaeda, led by Osama bin Laden. Nineteen terrorists associated with al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial planes on September 11, 2001. Two planes were flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, one hit the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and the fourth crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers intervened. The key operational planner was Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who conceived the idea of using hijacked planes as weapons. Most hijackers were Saudi nationals, and all 19 died during the attacks. Bin Laden admitted his role in orchestrating the attacks and was killed by U.S. forces in 2011.
