The tomb of Tutankhamun was discovered by the British archaeologist and Egyptologist Howard Carter on November 26, 1922. Carter made a small hole in the doorway of the tomb in the Valley of the Kings and peered inside with a candle to find dazzling treasures. This discovery was monumental because it was one of the most intact pharaonic tombs ever found, containing the burial chamber and numerous artifacts belonging to the young Pharaoh Tutankhamun. The excavation was funded by Lord Carnarvon, who was with Carter during the initial opening of the tomb.
Although some oral histories mention a 12-year-old boy named Hussein Abdel Rasoul who may have first uncovered a stone step leading to the tomb, the official credited discoverer is Howard Carter, who led the excavation and research team.
