X-rays were discovered by Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen on November 8, 1895. While experimenting with cathode rays in a vacuum tube covered with black cardboard to block visible light, Röntgen observed a fluorescent glow from a barium platinocyanide screen placed nearby, which indicated the presence of unknown rays passing through the cardboard. He named this unknown radiation "X-rays" and published his findings in December 1895. His discovery was revolutionary for medical diagnostics and earned him the first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901. Röntgen's careful experiments demonstrated that these rays could pass through many materials, including human tissue, making bones visible on photographic plates.
