LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) was invented by Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann. He first synthesized LSD on November 16, 1938, while working for Sandoz Pharmaceutical in Basel, Switzerland. The hallucinogenic effects of LSD were discovered later in 1943 when Hofmann accidentally ingested some of the substance and experienced its psychedelic effects for the first time.
