X-rays were invented by Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, a German physicist, who discovered them in 1895. While experimenting with cathode rays at the University of Wuerzburg, he observed a fluorescent glow from crystals near the tube, even when the tube was shielded, and identified this new form of radiation which he called "X-rays" due to its unknown nature. This discovery revolutionized medical diagnostics and earned him the first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901.
