The game Tetris was created by Alexey Pajitnov, a Soviet software engineer, in 1985. Pajitnov developed Tetris while working at the Dorodnitsyn Computing Center of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union. The name "Tetris" combines "tetra," meaning four (referring to the shapes made of four squares), and "tennis," his favorite sport. The game first appeared on the Elektronika 60 computer and was later adapted to the IBM PC with the help of Dmitry Pavlovsky and Vadim Gerasimov. Tetris quickly spread throughout Moscow and then internationally, becoming one of the most popular and enduring video games worldwide.
