Ed Gein, whose full name was Edward Theodore Gein, was an American murderer, suspected serial killer, and body snatcher known as "the Butcher of Plainfield" or "the Plainfield Ghoul." He gained notoriety in the 1950s when authorities discovered he had exhumed corpses from local graveyards and made keepsakes from their bones and skin. He confessed to killing two women, Mary Hogan in 1954 and Bernice Worden in 1957. Found legally insane, he was confined to a psychiatric institution until his death in 1984. His crimes inspired several famous horror movies, including "Psycho," "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," and "The Silence of the Lambs".
