Ulysses S. Grant was arrested in office in 1872 for speeding in his horse- drawn carriage in Washington, D.C. An officer named William H. West stopped him for driving too fast, which was causing safety issues after a prior accident involving a speeding carriage. Grant was warned once but then caught speeding again the next day, leading to his arrest and a $20 bond forfeited after he did not appear in court. Grant accepted the arrest and commended the officer for doing his duty despite his high status, making him the only U.S. president known to have been arrested while in office.
