The World Series is the annual championship series of Major League Baseball (MLB), played since 1903 between the champions of the American League (AL) and the National League (NL). It is a best-of-seven playoff, except for a few early years when it was best-of-nine, and the winner receives the Commissioner's Trophy. The World Series is often called the "Fall Classic" because it is traditionally held in October, although some series have extended into September or November. The New York Yankees hold the record for the most World Series titles with 27 wins, while the Los Angeles Dodgers and Yankees are tied for the most losses at 14 each. The only MLB franchise never to appear in a World Series is the Seattle Mariners. The most recent champions as of the end of the 2024 season are the Los Angeles Dodgers.
