A person who responds but is not fully awake should be placed in the recovery position.
What recovery position means
The recovery position is when the person is rolled onto their side with their head tilted back slightly to keep the airway open. This position also helps fluids like saliva or vomit drain out of the mouth instead of going into the airway.
When to use it
Use the recovery position if the person is breathing on their own, responds a little (for example by groaning or moving), but is not fully awake or able to maintain their airway. Do not use it if you suspect a spinal injury; in that case, keep the head, neck, and spine aligned and wait for emergency help.
Basic steps (adult or child)
- Check responsiveness and breathing; if not breathing normally, start CPR instead.
- Gently roll the person onto their side, with the lower arm out, upper knee bent, and head tilted back so the mouth is angled downward.
- Stay with them, keep checking breathing, and get emergency medical help.
