Begonias are poisonous to cats. All species of begonias contain soluble calcium oxalates, which are toxic to cats and can cause symptoms such as excessive drooling, vomiting, mouth irritation or sores, difficulty swallowing, loss of appetite, and in severe cases, tremors, seizures, and abnormal heart rate. The toxin is especially concentrated in the roots, but all parts of the plant are harmful. If a cat ingests begonias, veterinary care should be sought immediately, although severe poisoning is rare if only a small amount is consumed. It is best to keep begonias out of reach of cats entirely to prevent any risk of poisoning.
