Dogs are allowed to eat cheese, but only in moderation. Cheese can be a tasty treat and a useful training reward for dogs, as many dogs enjoy it. However, most dogs are somewhat lactose intolerant, so too much cheese can cause digestive issues such as vomiting or diarrhea. It is important to avoid cheeses that are toxic to dogs, like blue cheese, which contains substances harmful to them. Safe cheese varieties for dogs include mozzarella, cottage cheese, soft goat cheese, cheddar, and cream cheese, but these should be given sparingly due to their fat, sodium, and lactose content. Cheese should make up no more than about 10% of a dog’s daily diet. Dogs that have lactose intolerance, are overweight, have upset stomachs, or kidney problems should generally avoid cheese or only receive it under veterinary guidance. Cheese can also be useful to hide medication for dogs that are reluctant to take pills.
