Humans are classified as apes. Specifically, humans belong to the biological family of great apes (Hominidae) within the primate subgroup called hominoids (Hominoidea), which also includes chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans. This classification is based on genetic, anatomical, and evolutionary evidence, showing humans share many characteristics with other apes and are closely related to them, sharing about 98-99% of DNA with some great apes like chimpanzees. While traditionally the term "ape" has often excluded humans in common language, scientifically humans are indeed apes as part of the great ape family.
