To request your file from the FBI, you can do so under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) or the Privacy Act if you are requesting records about yourself. There are two main ways to request your FBI file:
- Submit your request electronically via the FBI's eFOIPA portal, which allows you to request your file and provide a mailing address to receive the records.
- Submit a written request by mail, following the U.S. Department of Justice Certification of Identity Form DOJ-361 instructions. Your letter must include personal identifying information, be signed and notarized, or include a specific declaration under penalty of perjury. The letter is sent to the FBI's Record/Information Dissemination Section at 200 Constitution Drive, Winchester, VA 22602.
Your request should include:
- Your full name and mailing address.
- Identifying details like date and place of birth or former addresses.
- A clear description if requesting records about a specific incident or individual.
- Your signature and notarization or a declaration stating the penalty of perjury clause.
